Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
